A House to Live and Share: a home for the resident, a rest for the guests

In Fall 2024, ARCH201 studios explored residential architecture, focusing on the house as both a personal and social space. Students were tasked with designing a home tailored to a specific user, incorporating a portion of the residence for short-term rental. The project emphasized flexibility, contextual awareness, and addressing contemporary challenges related to housing and mobility within social, economic, and political frameworks.

The chosen site was in the historic Mebusevleri neighborhood of Çankaya, Ankara, developed in the late 1940s to house parliament members. Located between Anıtkabir and major academic institutions, the site consisted of two adjacent rectangular plots on Ayten and Şerefli Streets, measuring 20 x 70 meters. This central urban setting, near landmarks such as Gazi University and Gençlik Parkı, offered a rich context for exploring the relationship between architecture and its surroundings.

Designs needed to reflect the historical and cultural significance of the area while addressing practical requirements such as landscaping, access, and security. Students were encouraged to craft innovative solutions that balanced private and rental functions, creating resilient and context-sensitive architectural responses to the dynamic needs of modern living.
