Machina


The Architecture Department at Bilkent University has recently participated, as a partner institution, in the 2nd International Architecture Summer School in the Roman Forum, Rome (18-27 June 2021), an international workshop co-organized by ISAR (International Society of Archaeology, Art, and Architecture in Rome) and Özyeğin University in Istanbul. The network of partner Universities included: Özyeğin University, Istanbul; Università degli Studi di Firenze, Florence; Sapienza Università di Roma, Rome; Bilkent University, Ankara; Politecnico di Bari, Bari; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Bilkent University was represented by a team of 5 architectural master program students directed by the visiting assistant professors Giorgio Gasco (ARCH) and Giuseppe Resta (IAED). The Bilkent team worked on site in Ankara and developed a concept called “Machina”, an architectural design of a temporary Antiquarium for archaeological finds to be located in the archeological area of the Horrea Agrippiana (a warehouse complex built by Vipsania Agrippa in the 1st century AD) , part of the archaeological site of the Imperial Fora in Rome.

The workshop started on June 18, Friday, with the opening international on-line symposium “Architecture and Archaeology Connections and Oppositions”, where prof. Giorgio Gasco presented a paper titled : “Ground Level: conceptualising the proximity between architecture and archaeology”. Eventually on June 27, Sunday, all the teams presented their final results in the on-line closing session.
