Nevşehir Explorations

With the removal of the deteriorated urban fabric surrounding the Citadel of Nevşehir as a part of an urban transformation project, a very intricate system of underground structures was revealed.

The system covers the northeastern portion of the citadel hill and has spaces with a wide functional diversity including, oil production spaces, stables, a mosque, monastery and church.

In 2017 Fall semester, Bilkent University Department of Architecture’s ARCH 401 studio had the chance to study this very much atypical context with the partnership of Nevşehir Municipality. The design studio which was formulated around the concepts of technology, conservation and integrated process design, produced design proposals with a wide range of functions.
