This talk will explore the urban development process of Izmir Alsancak, offering insights into the typical urbanization processes in Turkey. It will commence with an examination of the 2002 competition and proceed to analyze the developments over the past two decades, highlighting the intricate interplay between design aspirations and administrative and political considerations. The discussion will conclude with an exploration of the agency of design disciplines and potential strategies for expanding their influence in this domain.
Biography:
Dr. Yiğit Acar, a Ph.D. graduate from Middle East Technical University, is a scholar specializing in digital humanities, architecture, and urbanism. His research interests encompass urban design, theory, data mining, artificial intelligence, and visualization. He has a number of entries and prizes in architectural and urban design competitions. Currently an Instructor at Bilkent University, he teaches architectural design studios, digital media, drawing, presentation techniques, and history courses.
