Introduction to Circular Economy in the Building Industry
The concept of Circular Economy (CE) and its application in the built environment is an emerging research field. Scholars approach CE from various perspectives, covering a wide range of topics from material innovation to city-scale application. This introductory talk about the CE applications in the building industry addresses fourth-year architecture students interested in the subject for their studio works or future studies.

She received bachelor’s degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering in Türkiye, and a master’s degree from Eindhoven University of Technology. Sultan worked as an Architect on international projects in Russia, Azerbaijan, and the Netherlands for several years. Since 2019, she has been conducting doctoral research on digitalization for the circular building industry. She founded the Digital Circular Economy (DiCE) Lab with Catherine De Wolf in 2021. After the disastrous earthquakes in Türkiye in 2023, she launched a network platform called RIAR (Research Industry Alliance for Recovery) to connect experts to find recovery solutions.
EXTREME Architecture: Learning from Antakya
Coordinating the EXTREME Architecture studio Job Schroën’s studio focuses on architectural design for extreme environments, including post-disaster recovery sites. The talk will focus on their current project in Antakya and the findings of their recent on-site studies.
Bio:
Job Schroën is an architect at September Architecture and a teacher at the faculty of Architecture at TU Delft. At TU Delft, Job is the coordinator of the EXTREME Architecture courses. In these courses, students make architectural designs for extreme environments such as post-hurricane Sint Maarten, the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan, Jacobabad in Pakistan, and Antakya after the recent earthquakes in Turkey. The course is frequently visited by distinguished guests, such as Achim Menges, Shigeru Ban, Ai Weiwei, and Andy Bow. Job has been nominated teacher of the year in 2018 and 2023, and he was nominated to the Educational Team of TU Delft with the START initiative in 2023.
The architectural work of Job includes the renovation of the theatre of Utrecht (by Dudok), concert venues like Ziggo Dome, renovation of Afas Live, and Metropool, museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Anne Frank Museum, Brabants Museum and Fries Museum, and the Paleisbrug in Den Bosch and several private projects.
