Our world is changing rapidly and beset with developmental issues involving growth, sprawl, economic stagnation and stratification, a dearth of open space, congested transport, environmental degradation, as well as socio-cultural isolation. In our continuing search for “sustainable” design and planning solutions, we must consider an array of societal and urban issues.
The Spine is located in the Bandırma Port. As its name suggests, the intended spine-like structure contains the proposed spaces. These spaces or zones are classified into 4 categories: circulation and exhibition, commercial, research center (Green Academy), and energy service.
The zones are differentiated from each other by their different structural skeletons, which are variations of themselves. Therefore, the process started with experimentation to define the structural system and its variations. Subsequently, the space in-between two structures creates one unit, and different units with various functions form zones. The assembly of these modular units creates spatial variations inside the zones.
Green Academy contributes to community education, the commercial zone includes shops and offices, the circulation zone covers the exhibition area on the upper floor, and the open bazaar area below. The energy service zone is allocated for technical spaces to fulfill the electrical, mechanical, and environmental demands of the building complex.
