By wider use of advanced computer aided design techniques in innovative architectural practices, architectural form is liberated. However, form is initially perceived as an abstract image without considering constraints towards materialization of buildings and would require top-down engineering solutions in a later stage of the design process. How about proposing a more efficient method, in which all constraints related to the materialization are evaluated at the beginning of the design process? Material, form, performance and optimization procedures are evaluated holistically in material based integral computational design, which is able to transform the conventional design processes.
Biography:
Sevil Yazıcı is the Founder & Principal of ParaMaterial, an interdisciplinary architecture, design and research initiative. As an architect, she investigates possibilities for enhancing human lives in terms of rehabilitating the built environment through the use of technology. She received her BArch Degree with honors from ITU and her MArch Degree from the Architectural Association (AA) in London. Throughout her studies, she attended courses at the Harvard GSD and worked in various offices including von Gerkan, Marg & Partners in Berlin. As the co-founder of the research team Zero.1 established at the AA, she developed Bi-stable Intelligent Structure as thesis project, patented by the UK Intellectual Property Office. Following her graduation from the AA, she joined Zaha Hadid Architects London office, where she was involved in and led various competition schemes and projects from the concept to construction phases. She currently undertakes research on computational design and materialization processes in parallel to her PhD thesis at ITU. Meanwhile, she continues on practicing in architecture & construction industry. Her work has received numerous awards and been exhibited internationally. Her publications include Architectural Association, Frame, Wiley, ACSA and Sigradi Conference Proceedings, Turkish Chamber of Architects, Dearq and more
