In recent years, vast urban areas have undergone radical and rapid transformations in Turkey: gecekondus have been demolished at the same speed as malls and condominiums have been built. How do the public authorities dealing with urban planning envision this new city? This presentation deconstructs the public authorities’ discourse on urban change/ kentsel dőnűşűm. Special emphasis will be given to the discursive mechanisms that legitimize urban actions.
Biography:
Dr. Annemarie Strihan is an architect and, currently, an instructor at the Department of Architecture, Bilkent University. She received her Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research on border regions appeared in publications including Regional Studies and Management Research and Practice.
