Armature As The New Layer

This project investigates how ancient urban grids—though seemingly erased—continue to shape contemporary cities as latent spatial structures embedded within the urban fabric. Inspired by Spiro Kostof’s readings on historical urban form, the project approaches Bergama as a palimpsest, where Roman planning principles persist beneath later organic layers. The project reverse-engineers the grid’s traces and reactivates its nodes—places that were historically significant and remain spatially powerful today—by introducing an armature that connects the open spaces formed at these nod intersections. Through its multiple variations, this armature enhances spatial experience and enables a renewed engagement with the city’s historical layers.
