Unbearable Lightness of Gravity: An Epic Story of Load Transmission through Structural Elements

One of the major challenges of a successful architectural design is to determine the appropriate structural system that would transfer the applied loads to the ground appropriately and efficiently. These loads that are perceived as complications in architectural design are due to gravity and they are an indispensable part of nature. It is also important to realize that most of the loads that a building is designed for are the self-weight of the elements that constitute the building. Therefore, the architectural design has a significant effect on the structural system. This talk aims to demonstrate the transfer of loads through structural elements in an unconventional approach, revealing the importance of gravity in the design world.

Biography:

Prof. Dr. Ali İhsan Ünay graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at Middle East Technical University in 1985. He conducted his master and doctoral degrees in the Department of Architecture at the same university. He taught structure classes at the Department of Architecture in METU from 1989 till 2009. Since then, he is a faculty member at the Gazi University. He has a published book on earthquake resistance of historical structures and more than 40 papers on architectural education, structure in architectural design, analysis and reinforcement of historical structures and earthquake design.
