Our faculty member Berfin Yildiz’s newest article, “Gradient-based representation for open-plan residential layout generation with architectural evaluation,” is now available online in Frontiers of Architectural Research. The study proposes a gradient-based representation for generating open-plan residential layouts, addressing the limitations of conventional approaches that rely on discrete functional labels. By representing architectural space as continuous fields, this framework captures functional transitions and overlapping spatial relationships while introducing specific metrics to evaluate the spatial performance of the generated layouts. The findings reveal that spatial representation is not merely a technical choice but a fundamental determinant of what generative systems can learn and generate.
