The Urban Collage

The concept of urban collage articulates a two-stage creative methodology grounded in analytical observation and systemic synthesis. In the first stage, the distinctive spatial, cultural, and morphological characteristics of Bergama are documented across multiple, mutually independent contexts. The latent capacity to recombine these elements together with the reference lines derived from the site defines a series of architectural units and their potential variations. This process culminates in the second stage, the formation of an integrated system and the construction of the collage. By utilizing the existing climatic characteristics of the area, supporting sustainability through materials and construction, and ‘taking the concept of sustainability in architecture beyond this perspective’, the system established in the collage stage aims to preserve and adapt the character of the system for many years to come, by creating reference lines and allowing for flexible variational combinations in response to future architectural and environmental changes.
