The Red Basilica of Pergamon and its Surroundings in the Context of Urban Archeological Heritage

This talk focuses on the Red Basilica, a landmark within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pergamon, and its surrounding multi-layered urban fabric. It will discuss the site’s historical identity, documentation and analysis studies, and assessments of change and decay. The presentation will also highlight conservation and management strategies within the first-degree archaeological site boundary, emphasizing sustainable preservation of urban archaeological heritage values. Finally, it will address the importance of an integrated approach that connects the Red Basilica with other archaeological areas in the Lower City to ensure continuity and visibility within Pergamon’s urban fabric.

Biography:

Evşen Ocak holds a degree in architecture from Trakya University and a master’s in Conservation and Restoration from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. She has worked on conservation and restoration projects for monumental structures and currently practices as an independent conservation specialist.
