Yaşar Kemal Insitute

The Yasar Kemal Institute is a public building that functions as a place for  storytelling, literature, and collective memory. Located at the entrance of a historical site, the design begins with a symbolic gate and freestanding columns that reference Roman ruins while serving as bird ponds, bridging the past and present. The building’s axis divides its functions: the north raised on pilotis, hosts public spaces like cafés, bookshops, and courses, while the south contains research and educational areas. A wing-like roof opens to the sky, symbolizing the freedom and imagination found in literature, contrasting with the rational, orthogonal exterior that reflects conventional views of literature as serious and restrained. Inside, curved walls create fluid, welcoming spaces for exploration and connection, while straight walls define focused zones.
