Weaving Space in Ghent: An Adaptation of Filature Nouvelle Orléans

At De Fabriek, the design revives the former cotton mill as a place of making, learning, and gathering, rather than preserving it as a static relic. Inspired by weaving, both as craft and strategy, it connects old and new layers: a central atrium reveals robotic looms, surrounded by workshops, archives, and shared spaces. The remaining windows of the Filature are repaired, forming a patchwork of light and memory; a new saw tooth roof brings daylight deep inside, referencing the building’s industrial footprint. Rooted in Ghent’s textile history, the project invites the public to engage with the fabric of craft and innovation.
