Architectural Design within Heritage Context

Cappadocia 2025

The “International Summer School: Architectural Design within Heritage Context” consists in a design workshop organized in Cappadocia (Mustafapaşa village, Ürgüp), where Italian and Turkish students will engage with the challenges posed by a region of immense cultural and historical significance. Cappadocia is a unique and complex territory, renowned for its remarkable landscapes and vernacular architecture. However, it is also highly vulnerable, facing the pressures of mass tourism that threatens to disrupt the delicate balance of its built environment and local communities.

A series of guest lectures offered by scholars specialized in Architectural History, Preservation and Design, provide a complete framework of knowledge about the preservation, the restoration, and the possible reuse of the architectural heritage of the region.

The workshop, integrated by site inspections and other on-site activities, will aim to explore design solutions and propose new scenarios that address the ongoing deterioration of the area. The goal is to protect the region’s cultural identity and safeguard the integrity of its historical and vernacular structures, ensuring that the future of Cappadocia respects its past.
