Building Information Modelling

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a new collaborative way of working methodology, underpinned by the digital technologies to unlock more efficient methods of designing, delivering and maintaining physical built assets as a human centric way. BIM embeds key product and asset data in a 3D computer parametric model that can be used for effective management of information throughout the building lifecycle – from the earliest concept design through to operation. BIM is asserted as a game-changing Information and Communications Technology and integrated process of project delivery for the construction sector as it introduces a new work paradigm offering powerful perspectives for the integration and coordination of different domains and the processes involved in the design, construction and operation of buildings.

BIM processes are now becoming the mainstream to both new buildings and infrastructure, and have great value in building design, construction and refurbishment projects where complimentary technologies such as laser survey techniques and rapid energy analysis are used too. Research conducted in the literature has shown that BIM adoption yields efficiency gains, helps elimination of waste and generates value in design, construction and facilities management. Thus, BIM implementation is critical for the Turkish Construction Industry to perform Digital Design and Construction at the high-end knowledge-based terrain of the sector in Turkey and beyond over the coming years for sustainable living.

Biography:

Dr Yusuf Arayıcı is a professor at Hasan Kalyoncu University in Turkey, the dean of the faculty of engineering, and the experienced research fellow of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) (2017-2019). His research spans from Building Information Modelling and process modelling to energy efficiency and sustainability both in the UK and Turkey. He has led substantial research groups over a prolonged period of time through continuous cycles of funded research and enterprise projects, graduated thirteen PhDs and published more than 100 papers and five books in BIM.
