We are living in a time of unprecedented global change. Borders are
being redrawn, social and economic systems are in flux, and environments are being reshaped at an extraordinary pace. These large-scale transformations demand not only solutions but also a
fundamental reconsideration of how we design, build, and inhabit the
world.
As crises proliferate\u2014damaged cities, displaced populations, ecological degradation\u2014we find ourselves compelled to adapt. This adaptation spans scales and contexts: rethinking the resilience of urban systems, creating spaces for migratory communities, and reimagining design practices in light of evolving technologies, shifting cultural paradigms, and an economy in perpetual flux. Adaptation is not only about modifying the built environment but also about redefining ourselves and the roles we play as architects.
In the Spring 2025 semester, ARCH 402 Graduation Studio took on the theme of Adaptation as a critical lens. We invite you to explore strategies for transformation\u2014at the scale of a single building, a city, or a broader system. How can architecture respond dynamically to rapid change? What new relationships can emerge between the built environment, natural systems, and human communities?
