This lecture explores how Extended Reality (XR), interactive robotics, artificial intelligence, and computational design redefine architectural practice and the built environment. Güvenç Özel presents pioneering research and projects that push the boundaries of design, from brain-computer interfaces controlling robotic structures to machine-learning-driven adaptive spaces. By investigating the intersection of digital culture and architecture, this presentation challenges conventional design approaches and envisions a future where spaces respond dynamically to human interaction, societal shifts, and technological advancements.

Biography

Güvenç Özel is an award-winning cyberphysical architect, critical technologist, and design researcher. His work explores how contemporary technology and media shape the socio-political and aesthetic landscape of digital culture and the built environment. Internationally recognized for his innovations in Extended Reality (XR), interactive robotics, and machine learning in architecture, Özel has pioneered architectural applications of augmented reality, robotic interactivity, and artificial intelligence-driven spatial design.

Özel studied architecture, sculpture, and philosophy at Bennington College and earned a Master of Architecture from Yale University, receiving multiple awards. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the Venice Architecture Biennale, SXSW, and the Sundance Film Festival, and has been featured in media outlets such as CNN, BBC, and Wired. His research on 3D-printed habitats won a top prize in NASA’s 3D Printed Habitat Challenge for Mars.

As one of the founding faculty members of UCLA’s IDEAS program, Özel leads design research on XR, AI, robotics, and computational design. His collaborations include Google, Microsoft, Autodesk, Tesla, Kuka Robotics, and NASA, shaping the future of interactive environments.

Date: 14/03/2025 Friday
Time: 19:00
Place: Online Lecture (zoom meeting id: 893 309 4302)

ARCH402, Lectures, News & Events

Artificial intelligence, Computational Design, Extended Reality

In an era where digital and physical realms are increasingly intertwined, architecture must evolve to embrace emerging technologies.
