The concept includes a communal kitchen and agricultural areas, promoting community engagement and interaction. Drawing inspiration from the constant movement of people in Istanbul, spaces around mezzanines are designed to simulate the continuous journey of going up and down, symbolizing connections between individuals. This unique circulation pathway, positioned at a height of 14 meters, links the ground level to a street, encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to come together.

The twisting structural elements within the design serve as a powerful metaphor, inviting immigrants, refugees, and individuals from various civilizations to feel embraced in this borderless space. Beyond addressing physical borders, the library aims to bridge psychological barriers, fostering a sense of unity and inclusion among all its visitors.

Author: Ayşe Irmak Çelik
Studio: Arch 202 Spring 2023
Instructor(s): Zühre Sü Gül

2023, ARCH202, Studio Works

Bridging Borders: A Work in Progress is a multicultural library project located in Istanbul’s Moda District, designed to challenge the notion of borders.
