Aysu Berk Haznedaroğlu, Ph.D.
Dr. Aysu Berk received her PhD from the University of Michigan. Her research interests are shaped around the relationship between structural system-form, architectural geometry, construction and construction process of free-form structures and the importance of material selection in this process. Berk published in the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities and Automation in Construction. She teaches Basic Design, Structural Analysis, and Structural Design.
Ayşe Henry, Ph.D.
Dr. Ayşe Henry received her PhD in 2015 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests focus specifically on the Late Antique and Byzantine periods, covering general themes such as the space and divinity and the conservation of historical sites. She recently wrote a book section on these topics. She conducted and participated in several excavations and surveys, and is currently the director of Kozkalesi Survey at Hatay. She teaches Medieval Architecture, Conservation of Historical Environments, History of Built Environment and Basic Design courses.
Burcu Şenyapılı Özcan, Ph.D.

Dr. Burcu Şenyapılı Özcan, recieved her PhD. in 1998 from Bilkent University. She has also worked at Carnegie Mellon University as a Fulbright Scholar. She has worked on projects carried out by the Columbia University's Art History, Archeology and Historical Protection Center. She has published in the journals such as Design Studies, Automation in Construction, International Journal of Technology and Design Education. Her research interest are architectural design, design education, computer-aided design, history of architecture and e-learning. She teaches Design Studio and Computer Aided Design courses.
Bülent Batuman, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Associate Dean
Dr. Bülent Batuman studied at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) and received his Ph.D. in History and Theory of Art and Architecture from State University of New York–Binghamton in 2006. His research areas include social production and politics of built environment, history and theory of modern architecture and urbanism, and urban politics. His articles have been published in various journals including Journal of Architecture, Journal of Architectural Education, Journal of Urban History, Urban Studies and Political Geography. His current research focuses on the architectural politics of Islamism and his latest book New Islamist Architecture and Urbanism: Negotiating Nation and Islam through Built Environment in Turkey was published by Routledge in 2018. He is member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Urban History and Praksis. He was a Fulbright visiting scholar at Penn State University in the 2017-18 academic year.
Chen-Yu Chiu, Ph.D.

Dr. Chen-yu Chiu received his PhD from the University of Melbourne. He conducted projects with Taiwan Ministry of Culture, Alvar Aalto Museum and Finnish Architectural Museum at Aalto University, where he pursued his post-doctoral research and various lectures. His articles were published in journals such as Journal of Architecture, Journal of Literature and Art Studies, and Journal of the European Architectural History Network. Chiu's work focuses on the intercultural dimensions of architectural theory, history and design. He teaches Architectural Theory and Criticism and Architectural Design Studio.
Giorgio Gasco, Ph.D.
Visiting Assistant Professor
Dr. Giorgio Gasco received his PhD in 2007 from Barcelona Polytechnic University. His research interests cover architectural design, design education, 20th century architectural history and theories. Gasco continues his research on the restoration work of the early Republican principles in Turkey, design education and the concept space. He has publications in Belleten, DC Papers: Architectural Critic Review and Abitare. He teaches Architectural Design Studio, Architectural Theory and Criticism, and History of Architecture courses.
Glenn Terry Kukkola
Glenn Terry Kukkola holds a master's degree from the University of Toronto. He has worked in different architecture companies in Canada. His research interests are functionality, context and discourse in architecture, sustainable environmental systems and design management. Kukkola teaches Environmental Technology and Construction and Materials.
Jesus Espinoza Alvarez
Jesus Espinoza Alvarez received his master's degree from the University of Arizona. Prior to joining Bilkent University, he worked in various universities in Mexico and USA. Alvarez is interested in education systems where traditional methods are blended with the latest technologies in architecture. He teaches Building Systems, Construction and Materials, Environmental Technology and Architectural Design Studio courses.
Mark Paul Frederickson, Ph.D.
Visiting Associate Professor
Dr. Mark Frederickson received his Ph.D. in Architecture with a minor in Management from the University of California in Los Angeles / UCLA, and his M.ARCH. and B.ARCH. from the University of Arizona. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer, an ORS Scholar with the University of Edinburgh, and the recipient of three Senior Fulbright Scholar Awards as well as a Fulbright Specialist Appointment to the Czech Republic. Dr. Frederickson has taught and practiced Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design in a range of cultural, environmental, and professional contexts in the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He is internationally recognized for his award winning projects in urban design and small town revitalization. He has presented keynote addresses in both Latin America and the Middle-East, and has developed design and planning projects on four different continents. His retirement from the University of Arizona has allowed him to continue his focus on international collaboration. Dr. Frederickson currently consults with universities in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, including Bilkent University and ARCHIP, where he assists in the development of new programs in Architecture and Planning. He is a LEED accredited professional.
Özge Selen Duran
Özge Selen Duran received her bachelor’s degree in 1999 and M.Arch degree in 2001 from METU. She is currently continuing her PhD studies in the same institution. She worked in various firms first as a project architect and later as team and project manager. Since 2003 she has been running her own office. Together with her colleagues, she produced works in a wide array of functions and scales. She is specialized in design process and management, interdisciplinary work and process optimization. She holds international certificate for BREEAM evaluation. She has been working with Öncüoğlu Architects since 2012 as a project coordinator. Duran teaches Architectural Design Studio and Professional Practice.
Segah Sak, Ph.D.
Dr. Segah Sak received her Ph.D. in Art, Design and Architecture from Bilkent University in 2013. She conducted her post-doctoral research at the Center for Interdisciplinary Methodologies at the University of Warwick, UK, through the international post-doctoral scholarship from TUBİTAK. Her research lies in the intersection of urban issues, memory studies and digital humanities. In addition to book sections, she has published articles in the Journal of Urban History and Space and Culture. Sak teaches Architecture and Society, Urban Metabolism, 4th year Architectural Design Studio and Basic Design.
Yiğit Acar, Ph.D.
Dr. Yiğit Acar received his Ph.D. in Architecture from Middle East Technical University in 2017. His research interests include theory of architecture and urbanism, urban design, mapping, data mining and visualization. He has participated in numerous architectural competitions and received multiple awards, and published in various journals. He teaches Architectural Design Studio, Designing with Digital Media, Architectural Drawing and Computerized Presentation Techniques.
Zühre Sü Gül, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Practice
Dr. Zühre Sü Gül, received her PhD from Middle East Technical University in 2015. Her field of expertise is architectural acoustics. She continues her research on room acoustics, building acoustics, noise control in buildings, vibration isolation, acoustical materials, coupled spaces, modeling of sound fields by diffusion equation. Gül's work has been published in the Journal of Acoustical Society of America, the Journal of Computational Acoustics, Applied Acoustics, Building Acoustics, and Architectural Science Review. She teaches Environmental Technology, Architectural Design Studio, Architectural Lighting and Acoustics and Fire Safety.
Ahmet Ünveren graduated from the Middle East Technical University (2010) and completed his masters studies at İstanbul Bilgi University (2013). He won several prizes in national and international competitions in the fields of urban design and architecture. His main areas of interest are computational design and digital art. Ünveren teaches Architectural Design Studio and Programming in Architecture.
Aly Taan holds a masters degree in architecture from Virginia Tech and a bachelor degree in architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the Agha Khan program at MIT in 1986-1987. In the early 1990s, he established the architecture firm, Gulf for Construction jointly with Group 5 to work on various scale projects in Dubai, Beirut and Juba. Recently, his projects focus on refurbishing old heritage buildings and institutions.
Alp Giray Köse
Alp Giray Köse graduated from Bilkent University Department of Architecture in 2016. He obtained his Master of Advanced Architecture degree from Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalunya (IAAC) which is part of Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) Barcelona, Spain in 2017. He worked on projects about kinetic facade designs, computational design with environmental inputs, self-sufficient building design and chip programming for intelligent buildings in his masters. He worked for a year in Turkish architectural firm as a project manager and then promoted to a lead designer. He is working freelance since November 2018 and taking part in competitions.
Berna Tanverdi graduated from the Middle East Technical University, Department of Architecture in 1992. She completed her M.Arch. at the University of Miami, U.S. She participated in design studio programs in various European countries; University of Washington 'Rome Program' - Rome: architectural design studio-1994, Bauhaus-Berlin: architectural design studio-1995. She is the owner of BT Architecture. Tanverdi teaches Architectural Design Studio and Professional Practice.
Deniz Üçer Erduran
Deniz Üçer Erduran received her Ph.D. in Building Science from Middle East Technical University. She conducted post-doctoral research while working in the Civil Engineering Department at Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. She has been involved in interdisciplinary research activities and published in academic journals. She has experience in teaching structural systems, construction materials, and environmental impact analysis.
After graduating from the Department of Architecture of Yıldız Technical University (YTU), Istanbul in 2009, she worked in Şahinbaş Fikirlier Architects in Ankara. She completed her master’s studies in the field of Building Science at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2013. During her master studies, she made an internship in Passive House Institute, Germany. This internship made it possible to be experienced in the certification of Passive House, EnerPHIT projects worldwide, assistance in energy consultancy and to work in a few Passive House projects after she came back to Turkey. To date, she has worked in the construction sector for more than 6 years in various firms in Turkey and internationally. Currently, she is a Ph.D. Student in Building Science Program at METU. Her main areas of interest are nearly zero energy buildings, building energy modeling, calculation of thermal bridges, sustainability.
Ekin Ekiz, Ph.D.
Dr. Ekiz started his career with providing consulting support for various structural projects both on and off-shore for energy (oil, gas and nuclear) industry. He has worked with various major corporations representing his firm at the client's offices, sustaining relationships with the clients, leading teams of engineers and maintaining budgets. He got involved in the project management of projects in Turkey maintaining relations with public authorities. He has worked on preparation for the public tenders with required documentation and cost analysis followed by construction of a work schedule and preparation of a cash flow analysis for the successful tender bids. He recently got involved with real time health monitoring of structures.
Ezgi İşbilen is a PhD candidate at Virginia Tech. She holds a professional degree in architecture (B.Arch) from Izmir Institute of Technology, and a graduate degree (M.Arch) in Architecture, Theory and Design from Middle East Technical University. Her research interests include the entanglements between architectural theory and contemporary modes of production, tectonics, and architectural representation. In 2018, she was a Research Fellow at Bauhaus Foundation at Dessau. She previously taught architectural design, history and theory at Washington Alexandria Architecture Center of Virginia Tech. and Eskişehir Osmangazi University. She teaches fourth year architectural design studio at METU and core architectural drawing course at Bilkent University.
Gökçe Ulusoy completed her undergraduate education at Middle East Technical University-Department of Architecture in 2008. Between 2006-2007 she studied for 1 year in Milan Polytechnic University Faculty of Architecture as an exchange student. Between 2008 and 2013, she worked as an architect in various architectural offices in Ankara. In 2014, she earned her Master's degree in Architectural Acoustics at the Building Science Program of the Middle East Technical University. She founded her own office Ulusoy Architects in 2014. Her areas of interest are architectural acoustics, gyms and multi-purpose saloon acoustics. She teaches Environmental Technology.
Fulya Turan received her MA and Proficiency in Art Degrees from Hacettepe University, Institute of Fine Arts. In addition to her solo exhibitions in Turkey, she has participated in group exhibitions in Turkey, Italy, Germany and USA. She has witnessed the present day with paintings under projects of “Aphorisms”, “White Collar”, “Entropy”, “Ox-y-Moron”, “Do Not Forget Us, O My People, We Are Demolished”, “History Repeats itself”, “Signs of Power and Governance” and “Good Night / Sleeping Beauties”. In these projects which get richer by touching each other, with diverse points of view of personal, universal, scientific, social and local, the data of the moment are being criticized. She has publications in the journals RH + Art Magazine and YKY Sanat Dünyamız about Willikens, Andy Warholl and John Currin.
Işıl Sencar Ertosun
Işıl Sencar Ertosun graduated from Middle East Technical University Department of Architecture in 2004 with the first rank and completed her master’s degree at the same university in 2007. As part of her master studies, she spent a year on exchange at TU Delft. Since 2004, she has gained professional experience in several architectural offices as well as academic experience in several universities as visiting lecturer and jury member. Besides being partner and design coordinator at Butuner Architects, Ertosun also works as a part time instructor and architectural consultant at METU Department of Civil Engineering fourth-year-design course since 2013. She now contributes to second year design studio at Bilkent University.
Umut Akın is a PhD candidate at METU, working on the seismic performance and modelling of reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections under seismic loading. He received his B.Sc. and Master's degree from METU, working also as a professional design engineer mainly concentrated on the design of post/pre-tensioned highway/railway bridges in national and international projects.
Meral Özdengiz Başak
Meral Özdengiz Başak is a graduate of Middle East Technical University and she holds a M.A. degree in History of Architecture from the same institution. She runs her own practice, Baobab Architecture and have won numerous awards in architectural design competitions throughout her career. She is currently teaching senior year design studios as well as history of built environment courses.
Melek Pınar Uz Baki
Melek Pınar Uz Baki received her master’s degree from Middle East Technical University (METU). She is currently conducting her PhD study in Architecture Program. Her doctoral research investigates architectural making with its expanded means in philosophy of technology, technics and aesthetics. She received various awards due to her academic performance. Her research interests are the notion of techne, architectural making, craftsmanship, contemporary modes of urban & architectural making, architectural knowledge production & representation and discursive practices. She has conducted several courses on architectural representation, design studios in addition to various research projects on Modern architecture, urban & architectural design practices, theoretical & archival works on museology and architectural reproduction.
Yavuz Baver Barut
Yavuz Baver Barut graduated from METU (2010) and completed his master’s on Computational Design and Fabrication Technologies in Architecture at TU Delft, Netherlands (2012). From 2005 on, he has been giving courses on Computer Aided Design and Presentation topics which he is entitled as Certified Professional. He has become in charge of his architectural firm “Mimares Architecture, Education and Art” in 2017 where he has been working since 2012. His interests are parametric design, urban design and computer aided presentation techniques. He has been practicing Aikido since 2013. Barut teaches Basic Design and Parametric Design.
Zeynep Öktem, Phd.
Dr. Zeynep Öktem graduated from METU Architecture Department in 2005. She completed her master’s studies in the field of Building Science again at METU in 2009. In 2019 she finished her Ph.D. studies in Bilkent University, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department. Zeynep Öktem is the co-founder of ONZ Architects together with Onat Öktem. She continues her architectural practice in ONZ Architects, founded in 2007. Besides working in different scaled projects as an architect, she won many prizes in both international and national architectural competitions.
